There were upsides and downsides to everything, thought Bloom as the desert landscape whizzed by her. She rode her motorcycle down what seemed like an endless road.

The labs in Los Santo Nebrick were famous for having some of the best medical equipment in the solar system. Dr. Sisstis had turned them down since they were run by a Girtablilu, which is why she was making this special run. Maybe they could figure out what was wrong with Andrew, or at least get a clue. Early on in her investigation, she had found proof that Jerry was behind the attack, which is why she was trying to find him. When he had left the hospital, he had deleted his e-mail address and dropped his phone service, so if she were to talk with him, she had to do it face to face.

It seemed like Jerry was jumping all over the continent from the reports she was getting. What she couldn’t figure out was how he was funding it. While she suspected others in this attack on Andrew, they were as intangible as the wind—there but not there.

Erica had given her some leeway in her hunt for the cause of this mess. She viewed these labs as her best chance as long as she remained on planet. She knew if she left the planet, that would mean a check-up, and a check-up would mean showing she was with child. That would lead to a big fight with Erica that Bloom felt she would lose since she didn’t have Andrew backing her.

Just thinking of her unborn baby brought up memories of throwing up before sunrise, usually tasting whatever she’d eaten last. Seeing her exit, she made a turn onto it. Thanks to technology built into the motorcycle, no human would notice her “vanishing” into the desert, and a hologram of her motorcycle would continue on until a rest stop where it would vanish overnight.

She followed the road that waved its way through the tall and ancient hoodoos. Some of them bore markings to when only one species lived out here. Clearing them, she found herself in the small city hidden from plain view. She knew there were active countermeasures so that its citizens could move about freely and the human governments couldn’t spot them.

If people thought the Indian wars were brutal, none of them had a clue how bad the Non-Human War of the Americas was. Since the original treaty had covered Europe, Asia, Africa, it was only with the discovery by Europeans of North and South America, followed by Australia and Antarctica, that they had been included into it.

It didn’t take her too long to drive up to the lab. Getting off of her motorcycle, it felt good to be back in free Non-Humans territory where more than one species resided. Where it seemed everywhere you looked, you saw someone different. Even though out in the desert you were more likely to see species adapted to the warmer climate.

Taking the package from a saddlebag, every effort had been made to preserve its contents.
